After 14 years of insightful writing, Mr. Russ Butcher, a cherished resident of The Village Voice since 2018 and current Everest at Oceanside resident, has officially retired from his role as columnist. Known for his engaging “Bird of the Month” and “Watching Wildlife” columns, Russ brought nature to life with vivid detail and deep knowledge—most recently highlighting the Red-winged Blackbird with his signature clarity and enthusiasm. His writing not only educated readers but also deepened their appreciation for the natural world around them. As a former professional journalist for The New York Times, Russ carried his talent and professionalism into retirement, offering stories that were always thoughtful, timely, and rich with character.
Even after moving into assisted living a few years ago, Russ remained committed to his work, continuing to contribute without ever missing a beat. His passion for birds, wildlife, and storytelling left a lasting impact on readers and fellow residents alike. Russ was also a valued member of the Journalism Club Board of Directors, where he mentored others and generously shared his experience. His steady presence, thoughtful counsel, and sharp eye for detail made him not just a writer, but a cornerstone of our publication. While we’ll miss his contributions deeply, we’re grateful for the legacy he leaves behind—and we wish him every joy and fulfillment in his well-earned second “retirement.”
